The Wine Society
Anyone a member? Any good?

£40 to join but large selection of wine.

Thinking of giving it as an Xmas gift.

I pay £20 a month to Naked Wines - Just received 12 bottles - 6 R, 6 W and they are very good wines that I've tasted so far

Re: The Wine Society
I have to admit, I do like a drop of wine. Cabinet Sovignog is my fave. But I tend to just head to the supermarket, they always have a decent bottle for a fiver on a deal. What;s the benefit of a wine club? Is it for real connoisseurs or is it genuinely a good way of saving money on decent wine?

I'm with the Virgin Wine Club

They top up what you put in by 20% per month.

If you intend to buy wine then its better than a bank for saving.

I've been a shareholder with them for nearly 40 years, and can say that their choice and service is outstanding. But the prices are a bit on the high side.

Give 'em the £40 to go on a booze cruise. Makes sense again these days.

Re: The Wine Society
Probably lucky that I despise wine, or I'd be ordering an AA membership monthly instead of a crate of wines!

Will pass this info on to the wine alcoholics at work though, as some of this will be right up their street.

Re: The Wine Society
Just like Supermarkets all the wine "clubs" vary but the Wine Society is very much the "Waitrose" also some of their dinners/wine tastings are superb. Also with the wine society you buy a share so it's a one off and the gift pack when you buy a share makes a nice present with the share certificate etc. Also if one day they "float" they will have to in theory buy your share so you might even make a few quid - unlikely but you never know!

Re: The Wine Society
Laithwaites is dog shit by comparison. Awful wines massively inflated.

tonka 3:20 Tue Nov 24
Re: The Wine Society
you don't have to buy anything.

The 40 quid buys you a share and you become a shareholder in the society.

You get then sent loads of information about wine and access to the largest selection on the t'internet if you want to buy some.
When you do order you get free delivery and great service.

Big Dave 3:12 Tue Nov 24
Re: The Wine Society
So Laithwaites is the same? Get membership then the amount you order is up to you.

Ta - will compare the two.

Dave... It's no big deal I can pull out at anytime... think it was through here that I joined... glitch in the system that you got a crate of 12 wines fro £30?? I had a crate of 12 Black Stumps that are now £13-00 a bottle each... like I said I normally treat myself to one crate a year (when I can use a voucher)

Re: The Wine Society
Yeah you pay 20 quid a mth but its like savings for when you want to buy - You also get free wines thrown in every so often but yeah it would be a bit of a strange present, hell, I've signed you up to a wine club but you have to pay 20 quid per month.

Re: The Wine Society
I belong to Laithwaites. You don't have to commit but I think I pay £40 a year and get 2 free bottles every time I order 12. I order every month so well worth it.

Big Dave 3:04 Tue Nov 24
Re: The Wine Society
Benefit to Wine Society is £40 membership fee then - I am assuming - you buy when you want.

Had a quick look at Naked Wines - you stump up £20 a month? Don't want to commit the recipient to £20/month.

NS - would never consider joining a club that has you as a member.

Try Naked Wines instead.

Re: The Wine Society
Okay.

Do you have to buy a certain amount per month or does the £40 give you access as and when you want?

I appreciate you can get wine cheaper elsewhere but some of the stuff they have appears to be only available on a single bottle basis through them. You can mix and match bottles to build up a case of your favourites etc?

Re: The Wine Society
Been a "shareholder" for years, they do things the right way.
It's a great gift for someone who like wine, gives you access to great curated information and although some things might be cheaper elsewhere overall it's good value for money.

gank 2:34 Tue Nov 24
Re: The Wine Society
You don't get anything for your £40 except membership and the requirement to pay them more every month for the actual wine.

Same as the chocolate one.

Lovely stuff, in both cases, but you don't need to be in their gang to be able to source it. Save your money.
